I listened to more doom this year than any other year. We had excellent modern doom such as Pallbearer, funeral doom along the lines of Loss, and everything in between. All told, there were a lot of excellent releases. Prologue is a doom album infused with sludge, prog, and a touch of hardcore. The key here is in the variety of the songwriting. Poseidon will be a force on the metal scene if Prologue is any indication. Why is it weird? Because this doom-laden prog outfit plays drums, bass, and violin and features both male and female lead vocals.

This dissertation takes as its central topic the musical genre of doom metal. Largely absent from the scholarly literature on metal music, doom metal is set apart from other genres by its use of extremely slow tempi, repetitive and processual forms, and a thematic focus on mortality and weakness. It draws attention to the moment of experience, in terms of both bodily and emotional response, and away from closure and resolution.
I divide my study of doom metal into three threads: musical analysis, thematic content, and the experience of a live performance. I begin with a concise history of the genre, followed by close analyses of two exemplary songs. Through this, I argue that doom metal is best understood as relying on groove for organization and propulsion.

Most Decibel readers are fiercely passionate about the music we write about here, and this passion extends to learning all about the backstories of individual styles, scenes and bands. To that end, people like our own Albert Mudrian and Dayal Patterson have given us great tomes of extreme metal learning with their respective work on death metal and black metal.
But what if you wanted to dig deeper to get a truly archival set of knowledge of this spooky sub-genre? Lucky for you, author Aleksey Evdokimov has taken it upon himself to gather this knowledge into a massive , word monster called Doom Metal Lexicanum. The bands featured include obvious favorites like Electric Wizard, Candlemass, The Obsessed and Saint Vitus, along with dozens of lesser-known heroes.
Aleksey says the inspiration came from the absence of a book dedicated to doom metal:. There are books about black metal, death metal, heavy metal, and legendary bands have their own books, but why did no one write a proper book about doom metal scene since ?

Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos , low-tuned guitars and a much “thicker” or “heavier” sound than other heavy metal genres. The electric guitar , bass guitar and drum kit are the most common instruments used to play doom metal although keyboards are sometimes used , but its structures are rooted in the same scales as in blues. Another defining characteristic is the consistent focus on slow tempos , and minor tonality with much use of dissonance especially in the form of the tritone , employing the usage of repetitive rhythms with little regard to harmonic progression and musical structure.
The album marked the band’s strongest selling debut to date, landing at number 3 on the Billboard , selling 66, copies in its first week, with 61, of.
We posted a non-genre specific list of 25 albums we’re looking forward to in , and now here’s list specifically of metal albums we’re looking forward to. The list spans from young buzzed-about groups to reunited legends to new supergroups, and it’s just a small selection of the countless metal albums that are sure to come out this year. Like with the non-genre-specific list, we tried to keep it to albums that either have a release date or some kind of confirmation that they’ll be out in , but who knows, maybe will be the year we get Tool or System of a Down or that Kirk Hammett solo album.
Read on for our list of 13 metal albums that we’re excited for in with even more without commentary below that You can probably safely credit Black Sabbath with inventing doom, but Candlemass were one of the bands that helped turn it into an undying genre, and their timeless debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus helped give the “epic doom metal” subgenre its name.
David Vincent’s growl is truly legendary. Meanwhile, Vincent had been playing Morbid Angel songs on his own with ex-Morbid Angel drummer Tim Yeung under the name I Am Morbid , but now he’s set to release new music for the first time in years with his new band Vltimas. Going by lead single “Praevalidus,” Vincent hasn’t lost his touch one bit, and they’ve got a little black metal in the mix too.
It’s promising stuff from three heavyweights, and it’s especially great to have David Vincent back making fresh, new music again.

Growing up in the small rural farm towns of Iowa can have an effect on youth coming into their own. For the most part, people tend to stay in their bubbles, work in the towns they grew up in and the world stays as it has been their entire lives. As young kids, Luke, Keith and Drew would daydream about playing music in front of crowds, much like their idols Metallica and Iron Maiden.
Finding others to share this love and longing for musical joy was fleeting for most children, but there was something about this world that stuck for the trio. Being in small communities with little to no creative outlets, the craving to do more, to see more, to create something beyond hometown conventions, was percolating. The duo had met a few years prior, touring with another band and became fast friends. With a love for occult imagery and stories involving ritual and hooded figures, it was inevitable that the marriage of dark imagery and love for heavy metal would culminate into something more.
In , Druids formed out of necessity with hopes of being able to play their brand of heavy riff-laden fuzz and devastation to people beyond their starting point of Pella, Iowa. Gaining momentum in the capital city of Des Moines, the band had opportunities to play with several touring acts. They continued to write songs, becoming more complex while pushing their own personal boundaries and abilities to create something new.
Something had to change, something had to fill out. Shortly after forming, the band had their lineup solidified, bringing a new level of tone, sonics and wall-shaking power.

Once more a Swedish band manages to deliver a piece of great music. There must be something in the Scandinavian air — maybe some haze in the Northern sky? Hexvessel fans will like it!

The early years saw them perform live infrequently, often to perplexed and sometimes hostile audiences. Along with a few of their contemporaries scattered across the globe, ESOTERIC eschewed this in favour of slow building intensity, extended and multi-layered compositions, and free form noise breaks. A foreboding and pervasive sense of unease permeated the early recordings — this was truly dark music. The growing interest in the style of music ESOTERIC had been peddling without compromise since meant more opportunities to perform on stage, something the band has relished.
Having been hinted at on previous albums, this side of the band was fully realized. It is a culmination of 27 years of uncompromising dedication to their craft — detailed and layered compositions and a high level of musicianship, foreboding production, and equal measures of utter darkness and melodic diversity. The record was released on Friday, November 8. Listen to the full album at the link below.
